why call yourself a hand maid?

Handmaid: the dictionary definition includes a personal maid or female servant.

Being a solopreneur for over 20 years, I have always had visions of supporting other businesses. In 2010, way before Hulu came out with The Handmaid’s Tale (which I binge watch), I knew the most important lesson I learned from running a business, was to make the conscious choice of what services I could enlist other like-minded solopreneurs to help me make sure I keep family first. I found creative ways, including barter, to help find clarity and more time to focus on what services I loved; not on tasks that took me twice as long or that I resented doing. I  thought I could do it all, but in reality, I could do the parts of my job that I loved the most, better when I contracted services that I was less than happy with (like cleaning my studio bathroom). I felt like a servant to my business.

Then came 2 special needs kids, and the needs of my family put a huge strain on my emotional energy and I realized something had to give. I was running 200+ client portrait studio and I was burned out offering my emotional bandwidth to my clients and then my family. And to be honest, on many days, my business owned me, not the other way around. I thought about all the business lessons I learned and began offered to other small business owners just like you.

I knew from this experience, I could help other businesses find their way back to creative freedom. And that’s where Hand Maid Creative began.
